FURNISHING THE SACRED (PART 1)
» 2008 June

In many instances, a designer–be she for interiors or for furniture–is called on to help recreate the homes inhabited by world-class people and persons of power and prestige: public officials and glitterati alike. However, rare and honorable is the moment when one is invited to recreate the space for the World Designer and the Powerful Creator.

In 2003, I had the rare honor and privilege to become part of the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family» of nuns in the Philippines, when they asked me to help them make their dream chapel located inside their project dormitory for girls in Cebu. Being the first of this kind even while this order is already in 4 countries, they were treading in very unfamiliar waters, as they have been used to providing not just safe homes for sexually abused girls, but also education and moral guidance.

Coming from a solid family with a strong Catholic upbringing, my heart cried out for the little girls. Some could not even look me straight in the eyes while wearing both their emotional and physical scars all over their little worn out bodies. Relatives and dear friends soon came to the rescue and like the blessing of rain, they came and poured thus making the chapel a reality.

A special project with my dear friend and designer (also the creative director of Snug Furniture Ltd.) May Té, is an interpretation of the stations of the cross done in collage-style from Swarovsky crystals to coconut shells and hand-made paper.
